Is there a burn ban in Kentucky today?
Fire hazard season in effect today
During Kentucky’s fire hazard seasons, February 15 through April 30 and October 1 through December 15, state law prohibits burning anything that can spread fire in or within 150 feet of woodland or brushland between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Today is in one of those seasons.
Fire hazard season not in effect today
Kentucky’s fire hazard seasons run February 15 through April 30 and October 1 through December 15. Today is outside both.
What the rule says
- The daytime limit does not apply when the ground is covered with snow, to fires for burning plant beds, or to railroad, utility and pipeline crews burning on their rights-of-way.
- A violation can bring a fine of $100 to $500, up to six months in jail, or both.
- All year, a fire must be attended until it is out, and state rules prohibit burning food waste, plastics, cans and glass.
- The Kentucky Division of Forestry lists the county burn bans it is told about, but says it is not always told when one is issued.
Cities and counties can ban all open burning by ordinance, and county judge-executives issue county burn bans. Check with your local fire department before you burn.
This page describes the state’s seasonal rule. It does not list bans that individual counties or towns declare, and it does not cover fire-weather warnings or restrictions on public land.
